Sign Language & Deaf Studies Professor

As an Assistant Professor in the Department of American Sign Language at Columbia College Chicago, I am dedicated to ongoing professional development that enhances my ability to create an inclusive and engaging learning environment for all students. My participation in workshops, conferences, and online courses has allowed me to refine my teaching strategies, explore new technologies, and deepen my understanding of Deaf culture and language. This commitment aligns with my broader professional interests, which include teaching, designing online curricula, integrating technology into sign language education, exploring linguistic variations within the Deaf Queer community, and researching L2 students' language attitudes and acquisition. I believe that continuous learning is essential for effective teaching and for staying current with the evolving landscape of ASL pedagogy.

I am a member of these organizations, America Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and, American Sign Language Teachers Association.

Experience:

Columbia College Chicago - Tenure Track Assistant Professor: Since 2020
I joined Columbia College Chicago as an Assistant Professor in 2020, after first starting at the college in 2016 as an Adjunct Instructor. During my time here, I've significantly contributed to the ASL program and the wider college community. My achievements include a complete rewrite of the ASL curriculum to meet ACTFL standards, encompassing twelve courses and the authorship of "Advanced ASL II" and "Disability Visibility." I also co-authored "Sign Language, Culture, and Power" to foster deeper student engagement with the Deaf community.

Beyond the classroom, I've coordinated enriching study abroad experiences, including trips to the UK and France to explore the origins of Deaf education and a journey through the historical roots of American Deaf education. Recognizing the evolving needs of students, I spearheaded the integration of online learning strategies for ASL, which proved particularly vital during the COVID-19 pandemic. To further enhance the learning experience, I developed an innovative assessment strategy to precisely track student progress and identify areas for improvement.

My commitment to student life extends to my supervision of the ASL Club, where I guided its growth into a recognized campus organization, attracting a diverse membership of Deaf and hearing students. At the college level, I actively participated in the Anti-Racism Transformative Team, contributing to data collection and the implementation of a college-wide climate survey. My dedication to teaching excellence has been recognized with the "Excellence in Teaching" award. Throughout my tenure, I have taught eleven different courses across a variety of delivery methods, ensuring a dynamic and accessible learning environment for all students.

Columbia College Chicago - Adjunct: 2016-2020
My journey at Columbia College Chicago began when the department chair invited me to join the American Sign Language Department. The supportive environment fostered my growth as both an instructor and a mentor, allowing me to quickly excel in teaching all levels of American Sign Language, from ASL I through Advanced, as well as various Deaf Culture courses within my first two years.

Beyond the classroom, I dedicated myself to enhancing the educational experience for students. I mentored numerous students on their independent projects and actively participated in several committees focused on assessment, DeafSpace initiatives, and videographer studio development. As the part-time faculty representative on the ASL Department's curriculum committee, I played a key role in creating and revising courses to align with college standards. My commitment to teaching excellence culminated in being honored with an "Excellency in Teaching" award. This experience laid the foundation for my future role as an Assistant Professor at Columbia College Chicago.

Columbia College Chicago (Online Education) - Since 2018
Eager to contribute to the evolving landscape of online education, I embraced the opportunity to become one of Columbia College Chicago's online ASL instructors. This role perfectly aligned with my passion for developing innovative online sign language curricula. I collaborated closely with the college's online programs department to ensure that students received a comprehensive and engaging learning experience, leveraging digital tools to effectively deliver both language and cultural instruction. This experience deepened my understanding of online pedagogy and further fueled my commitment to creating accessible and impactful learning environments for all students.

DePaul University - 2019-2020
Driven by a desire to broaden my experience in sign language education, I accepted a teaching position at DePaul University. During my time there, I collaborated with the program director to develop a new Deaf Culture course, further expanding my curriculum development skills and contributing to the university's ASL program. This experience provided valuable insights into different academic environments and strengthened my commitment to fostering greater understanding of Deaf culture within educational settings.

ASL Instructor/Tutor - Since 2007
My commitment to ASL education extends beyond the traditional classroom setting. I firmly believe that, as a Deaf ASL educator, I have a responsibility to promote and share my native language with the wider community. This passion has led me to diverse teaching experiences, from tutoring in the Interpreter Training Program at Rochester Institute of Technology to hosting community classes in various settings throughout Chicago, including Deaf Communication by Innovation, Chicago Public Schools and Libraries, and Steppenwolf Theatre. These opportunities have allowed me to connect with a broad range of learners and foster greater understanding and appreciation for ASL.

Northwestern University (Evanston Campus) - 2018 to 2019
It was a privilege to be invited by a group of students at Northwestern University to help revitalize their American Sign Language program. Collaborating with these passionate students, we worked to demonstrate to the university provost the significant demand for ASL and Deaf Culture courses. During this time, I taught four introductory ASL sessions, igniting interest in the language and contributing to the students' efforts to re-establish a formal program at the university. This experience underscored the power of student advocacy and the growing recognition of ASL's importance in higher education.
